Born in 1908, Sybil Gibson became enchanted with a piece of gift wrapping paper in a Miami store when she was 55. When she picked up a brush to create her own wrapping paper with materials at hand -- tempera and grocery bags -- she became totally seized with a compulsion to paint which lasted three decades, until her death in 1995. Gibson's work was an honest and passionate escape from daily realities and responsibilities to a place of happiness, beauty, and freedom. Her colors are both lively and subtle, reflecting a rich and textured imagination. Gibson's paintings have been exhibited in more than 50 one-woman shows.
