We are sad to announce that M.C. "5 cent" Jones passed away in a Louisiana nursing home in March, 2003. Jones spent most of his 85 years living and working on the Lynn Plantation in Eagle Shute, Louisiana. He dropped out of school at the age of 13 to do plantation work; picking 300 pounds of cotton in a day was typical for him. His memories of rural farm life are richly captured in his watercolor and oil paintings, which detail both the harshness and beauty of such activities as hog slaughters, watermelon harvests, cotton picking, and church picnics. Jones also painted unusual portraits, nature scenes, and occasional religious imagery. He drew and painted for as long as he could remember, and his work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums across America. The works shown below are rendered in watercolor, oil, and ballpoint pen on posterboard unless otherwise noted. This page was last updated with new works on April 23, 2010.
