Alabama artist John Henry Toney had occasionally drawn pictures throughout his life, but he began drawing in earnest in 1994, when one day he plowed up a turnip from his field. He saw a face in the turnip and said he knew that face was a sign from God that he should begin drawing again. Now in his 70's, he does indeed draw regularly. He lives simply, in a trailer on the edge of a swamp. His drawings depict his everyday life, people and animals around him, Biblical scenes, and images from his dreams. He gives them delightful titles, and he often signs his finished works with his age, his address, his phone number, and sometimes his driver's license number.
